“The term ‘migratory child’ means a child who is, or whose parent or spouse is, a migratory agricultural worker, including a migratory dairy worker, or migratory fisher, and who, in the preceding 36 months, in order to obtain, or accompany such parent or spouse, in order to obtain, temporary or seasonal employment in agricultural or fishing work.” - SEC. 1309 No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
Utah currently serves approximately 4,000 migratory students through programs in 14 districts. They are Alpine, Beaver, Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Provo, Jordan, Millard, Nebo, North and South Sanpete, Ogden, Piute, and Iron County. Migrant Education also provides families with additional opportunities to receive health services, social services, nutrition, and other education.

The Migrant Education Program provides summer educational programs that include small-class and tutorial instruction in the basic skills for eligible children, ages 3-21 who’s parents, spouse, or the student himself/herself temporarily reside in the State of Utah. Special programs in the basic skills and in career awareness are provided for students at the appropriate grade levels.

The purpose of the Utah Migrant Education Program is to offer opportunities to migrant students that will ensure that they have the same level of academic success as all students. The Migrant Education Program focuses on the following:
  • Reading
  • Mathematics
  • English language acquisition
  • High school graduation
  • Family literacy
  • Preschool
Eligible Applicants
To be eligible for the program, a student must be the child of a migratory agricultural worker or fisherman, or a related occupation. Students remain eligible for three years after their families cease to migrate.
